Okay, not the greatest photo, but a fun night in Louisville.
Also – not the greatest concert – but pretty darn good.

As it was Van Halen’s first true concert with David Lee Roth in 25+ years, things seemed a little awkward – but not so much to be a killjoy. There were lots of smiles onstage, and I can only assume they were genuine.

It was also strange watching David Lee Roth using a headset microphone rather than a handheld. Those seem a better fit for someone playing guitar (which David did for Ice Cream Man). See a complete set list here.

Eddie Van Halen hasn’t lost any of his licks. His son, Wolfgang, seemed to be adequate on bass.

Opening act, Kool & The Gang, was disappointing. They retooled songs to be more contemporary, but I don’t want a rap version of Jungle Boogie.

If visiting Louisville, may I also recommend the Sports & Social Club. It was crowded pre-and-post-concert, but plenty of bartenders made for great service. A welcoming, friendly bar.
